Content Warning: Blacklight was an installation made in collaboration with Bianca Cabrera. We asked individuals to answer the question, “What is something you have never told anyone?” Then, their response was written out using UV pens. These pens make the text invisible to the naked eye until you shined a black light on them. We then hung these answers underneath the stairs in the Sojourner Truth Library. So, just as it is uncomfortable to reveal these things about yourself, it is also uncomfortable to read other responses. However, by reading the responses, we hoped to highlight the connection between human beings as many shared similar themes in their confessions including stories of sexual assault, embarrassing anecdotes, and suicidal thoughts. Also, we hoped for participants to feel a cathartic release by revealing these long-hidden secrets.
